Dentons, the world’s leading global law firm, today announced the formation of an affiliation with Jones Group International (JGI) to provide strategic advice to clients on a broad array of international policy and national security issues. As part of the exclusive relationship, JGI founder and CEO,
General James L. Jones, USMC (Ret.), a former National Security Advisor to President Obama, Supreme Allied Commander Europe and Commander of the US European Command, and 32nd Commandant of the Marine Corps, has become a Senior Advisor to the Firm.
Under the affiliation, JGI and Dentons will assist clients in developing relationships with foreign governments, identifying and developing new business opportunities, and assisting with domestic and international political, business and regulatory challenges. The relationship will expand the range of services provided by both organizations to address growing global issues such as internal and external security, organizational stability, and data management and protection.
“This affiliation is another key step in Dentons’ strategic vision to pair high-level legal counsel with in-demand global services to benefit our clients around the world,” said Dentons US CEO Mike McNamara.
JGI employs a team dynamic with far-reaching expertise in the military, civilian government, and industry, empowered by the knowledge that security in today’s complex and integrated world is multi-dimensional, encompassing not only physical security, but economic development, rule of law, and global governance.

JGI was founded by Jones and his son, Jim, in 2011. Jones graduated from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and was commissioned into the Marine Corps in January 1967. He served in Vietnam, serving as rifle platoon and company commander. On returning to the US, Jones pursued a career in the Marines, attending the Amphibious Warfare School in 1973 and the National War College in 1985, and serving as Marine Corps liaison officer to the US Senate. He was also commanding officer of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit in Northern Iraq and Turkey on Operation Provide Comfort; chief of staff, Joint Task Force Provide Promise, for operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia; and commanding general, 2nd Marine Division, Marine Forces Atlantic. He also served as Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense from 1997-99. He became the 32nd commandant of the United States Marine Corps in July 1999.
During his NATO assignment from 2003-2006, Jones advocated energy security and the defense of critical infrastructures as a core part of NATO’s future missions. Upon retirement in February 2007, Jones became the president and CEO of the US Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for 21st Century Energy where he worked to unite energy consumers and producers to increase the variety of the US energy supply and associated infrastructures, advance international cooperation on energy issues, protect national energy security, and promote better understanding of changes to the global climate and its effects on the environment. In 2008, he served as the State Department’s Special Envoy for Middle East Regional Security. From 2009 until 2010, Jones served as President Obama’s National Security Advisor at the White House. Jones has also served on the boards of numerous Fortune 500 companies.
